About Us

This project has been gestating for many years. In its lifetime it has gone by various monikers: Memoir Masters, The Magic Shoebox, JustUs, 5W, Memory Lane, Photo Moto, the Mosaic Community and finally 17Photos. The logos had an even more torturous existence.

In its early days, the project was more traditional and focused on the written memoir. We quickly learned that putting the right words in the right order is a tricky business. Memoirs are easy to enjoy, but devilishly difficult to write. When we eventually came to understand that a picture is actually worth 1024 words we swerved and ended up here.

17Photos allows you to replace the tedious writing process with the more intuitive collecting process of photo galleries. 17Photos takes your photo collection and lets you add Who, What, When. Where, and Why tags to them to help organize the photos so you can quickly find the ones you need. Then 17Photos helps you arrange the images in the best order and adds your verbal commentary. The resulting album is a chapter in the memoir you are creating on Memory Lane.

We stood back and looked at the albums and thought is this the best? Nope, so we went all in on the photo concept and invented the Phace as a mosaic of images that (help) tell your story. It was a welcome realization that the linear organization of a typical photo album or written memoir isn’t really necessary and that a random trip down memory lane can be just as rewarding.

In the beginning we knew that our project would be Open Source so that any interested party could see exactly what we are doing with your data. Why? Because we firmly believe that your data is yours and we will never use it for financial benefit to us or others. So you’ll never see an advertisement on 17Photos, and no third party will have access to any of your data.

17Photos was created by three generations of the DiCara family. Victor, Joseph and Anita are the elders who designed, coded and tested the user interface. In the next generation Kid Vic worked on the documentation, Tony on promotional videos and Leo shot holes in the implementation. Bhanu is from the third generation and coded data storage and retrieval as well as installation. And he specializes in keeping Victor's feet on the ground.
